Privacy Policy for the YachtNav App
YachtNav is built so that your data stays with you: no user accounts, no advertising, no tracking, no content on Navismare servers. If you use synchronisation, it runs exclusively through your own private iCloud. This policy describes which data the app processes, which external services it uses for that, and on what legal basis.
1. Controller
NAVISMARE Yachtlogistic
Apartado 5019
8200-427 Guia/Portugal

2. Principle: your data stays on your device
YachtNav needs no user account and no registration. All content you create in the app – vessel data (e.g. name, MMSI), routes, waypoints, marks, logbook entries, GPS tracks and settings – is stored locally on your device. None of this data is transmitted to Navismare or to third parties. If you use iCloud synchronisation, routes, marks, tracks and the crew and watch roster are additionally held in your own private iCloud – see section 3.
YachtNav uses no advertising networks, no analytics or tracking services and no profiling.
3. iCloud synchronisation
To synchronise between your devices (e.g. iPhone and iPad), YachtNav uses Apple's iCloud (CloudKit). What is transferred are routes, marks, tracks and the crew and watch roster. This data is stored exclusively in the private iCloud database of your own Apple account, encrypted to Apple's standards. Navismare has no access to this data and can neither view nor evaluate it. Apple Inc. or Apple Distribution International Ltd. is responsible for the iCloud storage under your iCloud agreement; for details see Apple's Privacy Policy.
You can switch synchronisation off at any time (iOS Settings → your name → iCloud → YachtNav). The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.
4. Location data (GPS)
The app uses your device's location for the following functions:
- Navigation: position, course and speed in the cockpit, guidance along the active route
- Logbook & track: recording of the passage with position, course and speed
- Anchor watch: monitoring of the position against the set swing radius
- Man overboard (MOB): freezing of the accident position and live bearing back to the MOB point
- Distress card: display of the current position in radio-call notation
Location data is processed and stored locally on the device. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (providing the functions you chose). You can revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings; navigation, track, anchor watch and MOB are then unavailable or limited.
5. External services (online functions)
For some functions the app retrieves data from external providers. For technical reasons your IP address and – for location-based services – the requested coordinates or map areas are transmitted to the provider concerned. No names, contact details or app content are transmitted. You trigger each of these requests yourself by using the function. Without an internet connection nothing is transmitted – navigation, logbook, anchor watch, MOB and the distress card work fully offline. Sources and licences of the maps and data are listed under Legal information (German and English).
Map tiles (OpenStreetMap, OpenSeaMap)
- Recipient: OpenStreetMap Foundation (openstreetmap.org; the foundation is based in the United Kingdom) and the operator of the OpenSeaMap map service (openseamap.org).
- Data: your IP address and the coordinates of the map tiles requested. They roughly reveal which map area you are viewing.
- Purpose: displaying the base map and the sea marks.
- Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (the function you called up).
Tiles that have already been loaded are cached on the device so that they do not have to be loaded again each time.
Wind forecast (NOAA)
- Recipient: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA/NCEP), the US weather agency (nomads.ncep.noaa.gov).
- Data: your IP address and the coordinates of the area for which you request the forecast (e.g. the area of your route).
- Purpose: retrieving the GFS wind forecast.
- Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.
- Location: USA, i.e. a third country. There is no European Commission adequacy decision for US government agencies. The transfer is necessary for the request you asked for to be possible (Art. 49(1)(b) GDPR). If you do not want this, do not request the wind forecast; all other functions remain usable.
Tides (WorldTides)
The app requests tides through a relay on navismare.com. The relay forwards only the coordinates of the requested place and the period to WorldTides (worldtides.info, Brainware LLC, USA). It does not pass on your IP address; WorldTides only sees the relay's request.
- Recipient: the relay on navismare.com (hosted by Hostinger, see below) and WorldTides.
- Data: at the relay, your IP address (as on any web server); it does not store coordinates or responses. To limit abusive requests (at most 30 per minute) it keeps a checksum of your IP address and the minute of the last request in a temporary file. With additional effort the checksum can be traced back to an IP address and therefore still counts as personal data.
- Purpose: retrieving the tide prediction; protecting the service against abuse and uncontrolled costs.
- Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (the request) and Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in protecting the service against abuse). You may object to processing under point (f) (section 11).
- Retention: the file with the checksum is deleted once it is 24 hours old; deletion takes place the next time the relay is called.
Hosting: navismare.com is hosted by Hostinger (Hostinger International Limited, 61 Lordou Vironos Str., 6023 Larnaca, Cyprus). Hostinger processes the data on our behalf under a data processing agreement pursuant to Art. 28 GDPR (Hostinger's data processing addendum). The server on which navismare.com is located is in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The request may first pass through Hostinger's content delivery network (CDN), whose nodes are located in several countries. Where Hostinger uses sub-processors outside the European Economic Area, the transfer is safeguarded by the European Commission's standard contractual clauses. As with any website, server log files arise when the relay is called; see the privacy policy of navismare.com (German).
Satellite imagery and map display (Apple Maps)
The app displays the map with Apple's map framework (MapKit). In satellite mode – and, where iOS needs it for the display, otherwise too – iOS loads map material from Apple Maps; for technical reasons Apple receives the IP address and the map area shown. Apple's privacy notices apply (apple.com/legal/privacy). The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.
6. Purchases and chart packs
You buy charts in the App Store as an in-app purchase; the app then loads them as packs through Apple's App Store infrastructure. Apple handles purchase, payment, refund and download (in the European Economic Area Apple Distribution International Ltd., Ireland); Apple's privacy notices apply. Navismare receives no payment data and no buyer names, only summarised sales reports from Apple. On your device the app remembers which packs you bought (product ID and purchase date) so that the charts stay unlocked without an internet connection. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR. The terms of the purchase are in the Terms of Use.
7. NMEA and AIS data from the onboard network
On request YachtNav connects over the local onboard WiFi to an NMEA gateway and receives instrument and AIS data (e.g. positions of other vessels). This connection stays entirely within the onboard network – no data is transmitted over the internet and no received data is passed on to third parties.
8. Notifications
For anchor watch, AIS collision alarm and fuel warning the app uses alarm sounds and local notifications on your device. No push notifications are sent through external servers. You can change the permission at any time in iOS Settings.
9. PDF/GPX export and sharing by you
From saved tracks you can create PDF logbooks and GPX files. These files are created locally on your device. Whether and with whom you share them (email, AirDrop, print) is entirely up to you.
10. Retention and deletion
All app data stays on your device – or, if iCloud synchronisation is on, additionally in your private iCloud – until you delete it in the app. Uninstalling removes the locally stored data; data held in iCloud you can delete in iOS Settings (iCloud → Manage Storage → YachtNav). Navismare has no access to your app content at any time and can neither view nor restore it.
For the external services (section 5) the retention periods of the respective providers apply. The file with the checksum of your IP address at the tide relay is deleted once it is 24 hours old (the next time the relay is called).
11. Your rights and complaints
You have the rights under Art. 15–21 GDPR: access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection. Where we base processing on legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR), you may object at any time on grounds relating to your particular situation. There is no automated decision-making, including profiling.
Navismare stores no content from the app and does not know who you are. The few data that arise at the tide relay and at the host can only be assigned to a person by Navismare if you give us your IP address and the period (Art. 11 GDPR). Send requests to .
You have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR). The authority responsible for Navismare is the Portuguese Comissão Nacional de Proteção de Dados (CNPD), Av. D. Carlos I, 134, 1200-651 Lisboa, Portugal, www.cnpd.pt. You may also contact the supervisory authority of your place of residence or stay.
12. Languages and changes
This policy is available in German, English, Spanish, Portuguese and French (selection above). We adapt it when new functions are added. The current version is at navismare.com/en/apps/yachtnav/privacy.
